Welcome to Per-Anders Sjöström's hifi pages.

Loudspeakers, horns

I built the first speaker when I was 13 (born 1959). The speaker was with a closed cabinet and a wideband speaker, SEAS 10" bought at Clas Ohlson. Sound quality, mja...hm...But I thought it sounded really well.

To the left you can see very solid horn speakers with two Philips 8" wideband speakers and a Isophon treble horn in casted aluminium.

The design is taken from a german book (translated into swedish). The book was "Bygg för hi-fi-ljud" (Build for Hifi sound) by H.H. Klinger. The book was small and thin and loaded with drawings of different kinds of horns.

The material I have used is lumber core. Those speakers were very beautiful both inside and outside. The wood is cut with precision in different angles i.e 22°, 41° etc. The paint is polyuretane boat paint. The surface is very glossy and also hard. You can see how glossy the speakers are if you look in mirror image at the speakers sides!

The design is taken from a german book (translated into swedish) by H. H Klinger (see above) and an article in 'Radio & Television' no. 7, 1959. Werner Schmacks was the designer of this particular horn.

Picture of the Schmacks horn taken from the swedish book Radio & Television, Bygg själv, Ljudteknik. The book is a collection of articles from the magazine Radio & Television in the horn and amp subject.
At the left you see can my speakers (green/black) and my mates (black/white). His horns are also built by me. The design was also taken from the book I mentioned before. They were equipped with one Philips 8" wideband speaker. They sounded actually quite well and the efficiency was around 106 dB at low frequencies and around 96 at high.

My and my mates horns in the basement.
At the left you can the original speaker with the treble unit which wasn't that good. Later on I replaced it with real horns from Isophon, see the picture at the top. There you can see the grey treble horn in the middle of the baffle, at the right in the picture.

Why was I hooked up with horns? It was actually a coincidence. I read an article in the swedish magazine "Radio & Television" about horns. After that I went to the library in order to study the horn subject furthermore. I was fascinated of the superior transient ability and the high efficiency. The article described a design with a JBL element and an efficiency of 116 dB at 1 W and 1 m. The sound impression was like a horse kick in the stomach. In those days my amps gave only a few watts but the sound level could get quite high.
